River Dee Season Opened On Crathes Castle Beat

River Dee Season Opened at Crathes Castle Beat

Monday, 2 February marked the ceremonial opening of the 2026 fishing season on the River Dee. Despite challenging weather conditions, with rain and strong winds, the traditional event was well attended by guests from along the length of the river and beyond.

Guests heard from members of the River Dee Board about the important conservation and educational work undertaken during 2025 to help protect and restore this internationally significant river.

The opening cast was made on the Crathes Castle beat by Colin Espie of Glen Tanar Estate, marking his retirement after more than 50 years of dedication to the River Dee. Colin also toasted the river with a traditional nip of Royal Lochnagar whisky.

The Milton Brasserie provided a warm and welcoming setting for the presentations, along with breakfast rolls for guests, while the TwinPeakes team were on hand to assist with the first cast.

The River Dee plays a vital role in supporting Aberdeenshire’s rural economy. Running from February to October, the season attracts anglers from across the globe to one of the world’s most renowned salmon rivers. Widely regarded as a bucket-list destination, the Dee draws high-spending visitors to the region year after year. (Catch and release is mandatory on the River Dee.)
